Games/Moments of 2024 (Local Sports)

Please note, this is my personal blog and has no work affiliation. These are games that I was at as either a fan, coach or worked in some capacity that has nothing to do with my regular job.

Every year, when we look back on the year, we look at the games and moments that stand out. Here are 10 of MY top games or moments in games from the year. There could be many different reasons that a game makes my list, some may be around the game, some may be more personal reasons.

Obviously, there is a lot of Ludlowe in here.

Remember, these are only games I was in attendance for. Also, these are in order by date, no other reason.

Let's go.

1) John Dailey's 100th career victory

Ludlowe boys' basketball head coach John Dailey picked up his 100th career victory on January 19 in a 49-29 victory at home vs Westhill. The win was also the eighth of the season for the Falcons, clinching them a state tournament berth.

2) Tate Mahoney sets the Ludlowe single-game points and three-points record

On February 14 at home vs Darien, Ludlowe's Tate Mahoney set both the Ludlowe record for points in a game and three-pointers made in a game. Mahoney scored 39 points, passing Cooper Dailey, who scored 38 in February of 2022.

Mahoney also hit eight three-pointers which passed Kevin Bentivegna and Brian Tharp's record of seven, set in 2011 and 2007, respectively.

3) Ludlowe boys' basketball win over No. 3 Wilby

After defeating Killingly at home in the first round of the state tournament, the Ludlowe boys' basketball team went on the road and took down Wilby, who was the three seed in Division 3, by a 44-42 score.

4) Ludlowe/Waterford State boys basketball quarterfinal

While this was not a great game on the scoreboard, Ludlowe came away with a 70-48 victory, there were a lot of other factors that had this game make my list.

It's about friendships. Waterford featured Matt Shampine and Colby Sheehan, who Rob Adams and I had seen in prior summers broadcasting Babe Ruth baseball.

That led Rob to broadcast the game and have Mike Buswell, who coaches Trumbull Babe Ruth, to join Rob for the call. Trumbull and Waterford Babe Ruth have a great relationship and have had many terrific battles over the years.

Give it a listen here.

5) Ludlowe Baseball's Ben Crawford HR vs Southington

This one is very similar to when I wrote about the Ludlowe baseball playoff game against Hamden a year ago.

In this case, Ben Crawford came up in the fifth inning of a second-round state tournament game vs Southington, who was the number one seed in Class LL. There were two men on base, with Ludlowe trailing 2-0.

Crawford proceeded to hit the first pitch he saw over the left-center field wall for a go-ahead three run home run.

It was a great moment in the game, and a special moment for so many reasons.

Unfortunately, Southington would come back and come away with a 7-3 victory.

But that doesn't take away from what an awesome moment the home run was.

6) Stamford wins the CT 13U Babe Ruth Baseball Championship

What has been an annual tradition, Rob Adama and I broadcasted a Babe Ruth baseball tournament in Trumbull. This year it was the 13U tournament won by Stamford. Stamford defeated Easton in the Championship in a back-and-forth game. Honestly, there were many options of games from this tournament I could have picked, but the championship being a comeback was an easy choice.

7) Cole Gibson no-hitter for Barnums

Cole Gibson, pitching for the Bridgeport Barnums of the CCBL, threw a no-hitter on July 27 in a 5-0 victory over Wallingford. Gibson walked just one and struck out 10. You can read more here.

8) Warde/Ludlowe Girls Volleyball

The two teams split the first two sets before Warde took the third. In the third set, Warde's Lalia Henry notched her 1,000th assist of her career and was recognized for that.

Ludlowe took the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, Warde came out on top with a 15-11 set and to win the match three sets to two.

9) Ludlowe Football win over Wilton

In a game that propelled Ludlowe football to their first state tournament berth in school history, Ludlowe defeated Wilton 21-14, including getting a late defensive stop to seal the victory. Ryan Tompkins had two rushing touchdowns, and Ryan Menozzi had a TD catch from Grant Stupak.

10) Ludlowe girls' basketball edges Warde to win the Todd Burger Memorial Tournament

In a game in which Ludlowe had to come from behind to take the lead, Warde had a chance to tie the game late, but Ludlowe came away with a close 46-43 victory to capture the Todd Burger Tournament.

I realize I did not include any Ludlowe boys' soccer. A team I watched a lot of that had success. There just did not seem to be any game or moments that truly stood out to me. I could have gone with one of Charlie Jones' hat tricks, I guess. Let's give that an honorable mention.

I'm sure there are other teams and games I should have included also. Maybe I missed something. But again, it's my thoughts.

Looking forward to what 2025 has to bring!

Historic Season for Ludlowe Football

The Ludlowe football season came to an end tonight in the Class L State Quarterfinals.

That said, the players and coaches have nothing to hang their heads about.

It was a tremendous season. A historic one.

An 8-2 regular season record and a playoff appearance, the first official playoff appearance by a Fairfield public high school*.

*Ludlowe had made championships in the late 50's and 60's but that was before a true playoff format.

Either way, it's been a LONG time, if not the first time.

The only Ludlowe losses came New Canaan and Darien (twice, including the playoff game). Those are two perennial powers in the league and the state.

From where this program was for so many years to where is has been the last handful to where it is now, is something extremely impressive.

It's a credit to the entire team, but especially this season class.

Cooper Seek, Ryan Menozzi, Ryan Tompkins, Justin Toothaker, Ryan Torello, Grant Stupak, Jackson Frame, Ramzee Atta, Lleyton DeThomas, Jonathan Stekloff, Cole Mylen, Owen Sparks, Shane Walters, Will Dunn, Alec Mertz, John Napolitani, Sebastian Guzman, Justin Ann, Mac DeAddio and Dylan Gray.

After that, it's non-seniors like Liam Bond, Brady Morison, Timmy O'Neill, Jake Palladino, Tucker Seek, Miko Marano and so many others.

I'm just thinking of guys off the top of my head.

Credit as well to Head Coach Mitch Ross and his entire coaching staff.

It's also about all the support staff and the parents. A lot goes into making high school sports, especially football, a special experience.

-----------

The season was even more impressive considering where Ludlowe football was at years ago.

So many years of winless seasons or one- or two-win seasons. Ludlowe suffered 14-game losing streaks on two separate occasions, 2011-2012 and 2016-2017.

Even if it wasn't to that degree, Ludlowe football had struggled for a number of years

What Ross has done since his arrival in 2017 is extremely impressive. In his first year in 2017, they only won a single game. However, things changed in his second year, setting a then record with seven wins.

They have won seven games twice in Ross' tenure and never had a losing season.

This season was a culmination of many seasons leading up to this one. Everyone knew this was a talented class and it's great to see the hard work combined with the talent pay off.

You made not only the Ludlowe football community proud, but the school community and the town.

You have people talking about this program. In a positive way.

Proud of this group.

Hopefully this is just another step for the program's success.

Ludlowe/Warde Football - Thanksgiving 2024

Thanksgiving was once again the annual Ludlowe vs Warde football game.

The weather forecast was calling for rain so there was much discussion in the days prior about moving the game to Wednesday.

This was done in 2018 due to freezing temperatures predicted for Thanksgiving, but the game is normally on Thanksgiving Day.

Normally, I am totally against moving it. I'm a traditionalist and like Thanksgiving football.

However, this year, I would have been okay with-it being Wednesday. With no disrespect intended to the teams', Thanksgiving football is as much about the game as it is a community event.

That said, I have no say.

The game stayed on Thanksgiving Day, and it did in fact rain. In fact, all the games in the FCIAC that were scheduled for Thanksgiving Day stayed on that day. The weather definitely kept the crowd down, which is unfortunate. I am okay with the game staying on Thanksgiving though.

Okay, I've buried the lede.

Ludlowe came out with a 38-16 victory. The win clinches Ludlowe a spot in the Class L playoffs, where they will face Darien on Tuesday. Time to be determined.

It's the first playoff appearance for Ludlowe football in school history in the post Fairfield High School era.

The Falcons also finish the regular season, with an 8-2 record, the best in program history.

Liam Bond, who had four rushing touchdowns, was named the Ludlowe MVP. Quinn Russo was the Warde MVP of the game.

The MVPs are presented with a trophy and receive a scholarship from the Fairfield Rotary Club. Thanks to Bill Llewllyn and Bruce Carter from the Fairfield Rotary Club for recognizing our student-athletes.

I also have to say, personally, I am a fan of formal post-game ceremonies, which I don't feel like always get done. This year, however, it was done well.

First, the MVPs were brought together with Carter and a cheerleading from each team. It was Gabby DiGiacomo from Warde and Susana Charron from Ludlowe. The cheerleaders then handed the MVP's their trophy with Carter nearby. Both teams were also surrounding all of them at mid-field.

Then, with both teams still near mid-field, Ludlowe Athletic Director Todd Parness presented the Gallagher-Baynas Trophy to the Ludlowe captains, Cooper Seek, Ryan Menozzi, Ryan Tompkins and Ramzee Atta.

Now it's on to Tuesday for Ludlowe football and then winter sports will be here soon.

Caring Too Much

This post is NOT meant for acknowledgement in any way. It's just sort of to explain some things.  I realize that it doesn't come off the best. and it's still sort of vague.

I care.

Sometimes too much.

And sometimes to a fault.

This happens with work.

I care about the students (especially student-athletes), coaches, parents and teams.

Working it schools and in the role I am in, it's about the students (mostly) coaches and teams.

I do things that are not part of my job.

Because I care.

With that, nobody knows what my actual role is.

I guess those two are interchangeable and connected.

I do things that are not my job because I am asked because people don't know my role and I care and want to get things done for people.

While trying to be nice and I appreciate the respect, this isn't always the best thing in the grand scheme.

This is how I care....too much.

Of course, I have certain teams and athletes that I am closer with.

This sometimes causes friction.

Because it looks like I don't care about certain groups.

But I care about them all.

I do things on my own time with certain groups, but people don't know that's not part of my official job.

Someone recently asked me when introducing me when my official title was. When I told them "Athletic secretary" they were surprised.

Because they see me at games and other times doing many different things.

Because I care. (And am passionate).

Additionally, sometimes I am sure I am annoying.

But I don't intend to be. I just try to be supportive.

Because I care.

With the care, comes respect and friendships.

The downside of that is that I am sometimes (or often) too friendly and don't get looked at as an "authoritative figure" which is especially an issue in my role as advisor of The Nest.

Even outside of work and work-related items, I care too much.

I am annoying in terms of supporting people, but I support because I care.

Then I say "Sorry" for being annoying (and often told I am not annoying and to stop saying sorry.)

I care about people. Which is a great trait in a lot of ways.

Sometimes I care too much.

A #OneTown Football Friday

Warde on the left, McMahon for Ludlowe on the right (low quality SS photo)

It was a #OneTown football Friday, despites the teams not playing each other and the games being played in different towns.

First, I was at Warde to due tickets for their home game against Darien. I left that game at halftime with Darien on top 35-0. The Blue Wave came away with a 49-7 victory.

Some people might question when am mentioning the score. It's just stating information and it's still important to report.

After leading Warde at halftime, I headed down to Brien McMahon in Norwalk for Ludlowe's game with Norwalk High School.

Norwalk High is playing their home games at McMahon this season, and for the next couple seasons, likely, as the new Norwalk High School is being built on the grounds of the former Sam Testa Field on the current Norwalk HS campus.

I got down there at the end of the first quarter with Ludlowe already on top 20-7 thanks to three Liam Bond touchdowns. Bond would finish with four touchdowns on the night as Ludlowe came out on top 52-21.

Justin Toothaker had multiple touchdowns on the evening as well.

Ludlowe vs Norwalk is also a matchup featuring a former/current Falcon as well as another former Falcon.

Mike Forget, former Ludlowe football head coach and current FLHS PE teacher is the Bears head coach. Sydney Ciuffo (formerly Judkins) is the former Ludlowe Athletic Trainer, now at Norwalk.

Ludlowe improves to 7-2, tying the record for most wins in school history.

While I believe unofficial at this point, tonight's win all but clinches a playoff spot for Ludlowe.

Next up Warde and Ludlowe will face off on Thanksgiving at 10am at Ludlowe.

Ludlowe Football Inches Closer To Playoff Berth With Win Over Wilton

Another Friday night.

Another football Friday.

This wasn't just any football Friday, however.

Ludlowe picked up a 21-14 victory over Wilton on senior night. Ludlowe improves to 6-2 with the win. The Falcons need to win at least one of their final two games to make the state tournament.

Ludlowe in looking to make the state tournament for the first time in school history (post Fairfield High School edition.)

Next up, Ludlowe takes on Norwalk next Friday at Brien McMahon High School. The regular season concludes on Thanksgiving as they host Warde.

Ludlowe got on the board first on a Ryan Tomkins two-yard run on a direct snap to the running back with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

Tompkins pushed the Ludlowe lead to 14-0 with a 23-yard run with 5:25 to play in the first half.

After Wilton scored to cut the Ludlowe lead in half, the Falcons answered.

On the first play after the ensuing kickout, Grant Stupak connected with Ryan Menozzi for a 74-yard touchdown to increase the Ludlowe lead to 21-7 with 4:16 left in the half.

The game would remain that way until late in the third quarter when Wilton would get a touchdown to cut the Ludlowe lead to 21-14.

The Falcon defense was strong in the fourth quarter, including getting a fourth down stop as Wilton was driving with under a minute to play looking to tie (or win) the game.

Ludlowe also converted two fourth downs late in the game, including a fourth-and-four from their own 19-yard line with four minutes left when Stupak connected with Menozzi for a long gain.

Later in the quarter, Stupak found Justin Toothaker on fourth down to keep the clock moving.

------------------

So proud of these guys. A great group of kids and better athletes.

This is a program that has been on the rise.

This is definitely a huge win in terms of the hype that was coming into the game as Ludlowe got the job done.

I still think back to how many years Ludlowe football either didn't win a single game or won only one.

On two occasions, 2011-2012 and 2016-2017, Ludlowe had 14 game losing streaks.

Then, things changed, 2018, Ludlowe goes 7-3 and have not looked back with a .500 record or better every year since.

We will see what happens in the coming weeks.

------------------------

Congrats to all the seniors on the senior night victory. A terrific senior class for football and athletics.

-----------------------

Not to be forgotten, prior to the football game, the Ludlowe field hockey team hosted Greenwich in the state Class L second round.

Ludlowe came away with a 3-2 overtime victory. The Falcons game-winner came with six second left in the extra session on a goal by freshman Lily McClay. It was one of two goals on the day for McClay.

Postseason Soccer Friday

It's another weekend of writing about local high school games I was at.

Most of you will likely stop reading now.

Friday was another busy sports afternoon and evening.

Ludlowe hosted girls' and boys' soccer CIAC (State) Class LL first round games as the higher seeds.

The girls hosted Warde, so it's always interesting when you get the cross-town matchup in a postseason game, especially a state tournament game.

It's unfortunate that it was a first-round matchup and not later in the tournament.

You know that one team's season is coming to an end. We always want to see all out teams make deep postseason runs.

On the contrary, I know from a work perspective, we will have a team advancing.

Warde came out on top with a 2-0 victory. Both goals came from senior Paige Shaughnessy.

The Mustangs advance to the 2nd round where they will play at Manchester at 4pm on Monday.

Next up was the Ludlowe boys hosting Wilbur Cross.

It was a matchup of intense physicality and emotion.

Both teams had opportunities, but neither would put a goal in net in regulation.

That sent the game to overtime. Again, neither team would score in either of the 10-minute overtime sessions.

The game would go into penalty kicks.

There, Wilbur Cross would edge Ludlowe 5-4 in PK's.

I try to support all our athletes, but as I've stated many times, this boys' soccer team is a special group for me. Led by Charlie Jones, Ian Moore, Kenny Luczaj and Luke Dilillo. But it's more than that, it's Chase McCormack, Chase Mehta, Brendan Walsh and others. I know I shouldn't list people, because then I am leaving people out.

Additionally, the Ludlowe football team was playing at McMahon. This game was going on at the same time as boys' soccer, so I stayed at Ludlowe for soccer while following football via text and the live stream.

The Falcons defeated McMahon 27-21 behind four Ryan Tompkins touchdowns.

Ludlowe improves to 5-2 and will host Wilton on Friday.

Looking ahead, the fall season is quickly winding down. Winter sports will be here soon.

2024 World Series - 30 -

2024 World Series - 30 -

The 2024 World Series came to a close on Wednesday night with the Dodgers defeating the Yankees in five games.

As a Yankees fan, it was a disappointing ending. While some people might say getting to the World Series makes it a terrific season, winning it all is the ultimate goal and that did not happen.

Congrats to the Dodgers. They were the better team.

Happy for the local kid, Ben Casparius, 2017 Staples graduate, who gets a championship.

Like every team, there were ups and downs for the Yankees, they started strong, struggled during the middle of the season, and they found it again late in the regular season.

Even in their division series win over the Royals and championship series win over the Guardians, it felt like the Yankees were not playing great baseball. They found a way to win those games, but you knew if they played the Dodgers, they would have to play better than they had previously.

And they did play the Dodgers. And they didn't play that much better.

That's not to take away what LA did. As I said, they were the better team and deserved to win. Their lineup is relentless and their pitching, which was suspect coming in, did enough.

If you think about the Dodgers lineup, with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman at the top and then guys like Kike Hernandez and Teoscar Hernandez to Tommy Edman and others. Just so relentless.

Honestly, people will say the Yankees will be back. But every year is different, and it is so difficult to just make, yet alone win., the World Series.

Now the questions begin. The biggest one being will Juan Soto be back, or was he just a one-year rental? Gleyber Torres is also a free agent.

The Yankees have already announced that Aaron Boone will be back as manager. I'm sure that doesn't make a lot of fans happy.

Sure, has Boone made some questionable decisions, yes. But fans will question decisions made no matter who is the manager, especially if it doesn't work.

I hate when baseball season ends. Sure, we have football, basketball and hockey, but my number one sport will always be baseball. Plus, it gives us games basically ever night. I love that it's a marathon, not a sprint.

It's been fun, but obviously could have been special.

Only 103 days and counting until Pitchers and Catchers report for the 2025 season!

Respect for Exit 55

Rob's Blog Profile Photo

Streaks of doing something in a row are super impressive.

Whether that be in sports, like Lou Gehrig or Cal Ripken, or anything in life.

Like writing.

My friend, Rob Adams, announced earlier today on his blog, "Exit 55", that his consecutive days streak of blog posts will come to an end tomorrow. Today is the last day of the streak.

Since December 30, 2018, Rob has written a blog post every day.

2,129 consecutive posts.

Just incredible.

Another friend, John Nash, challenged Rob late in 2018 to "Project 365", which meant writing one post every day for a year. Rob did that and so much more.

Some might say, it's just writing, how hard is it? Oh, it's a lot harder than it looks. Believe me.

To have the time, energy, and creativeness to come up with topics just shows incredible dedication.

It's also about having a device with you to do it and having internet access everywhere you go.

Yes, it's possible to write on a phone, but much simpler to write on a laptop or computer.

And so much more that goes into it.

It's not about the number of readers, and sometimes people write for themselves, but you also want to write something interesting, in some way.

It's not my story to tell, and Rob wrote a lot of it on his blog, but everything that has gone on since Rob started the streak, both personally for Rob, and in the world, just makes the streak even more impressive.

He's written about so many important topics. Some posts are more serious, some more light-hearted. And many different topics. Sports, both local and professional, family, music, broadcasting, and so much more.

That is what makes his blog even better, how diverse it can be.

As Rob says, he will continue to blog, and I hope he does a lot. I always look forward to his posts. However, now there is no pressure, and he can write when he wants about what he wants.

If I write more, I am just rambling.

I just wanted to give the respect to Rob, "Exit 55", and the streak that it deserves. And I likely didn't give it the justice it deserves.

He's not only a tremendous broadcaster, but a terrific writer as well. Most importantly, an amazing, loyal friend and person.

I'll leave you with this. Make the Exit 55 Blog part of your reading.

Well done, Rob. Well done, my friend.

Enjoy the well-deserved break.

Volleyball Friday, Football Saturday and Supporting Important Causes

Ludlowe/Warde girls' volleyball FCIAC quarterfinal action

It's pretty clear what games I was at this weekend, based on the title of this blog post.

On Friday, Ludlowe and Warde faced off in the FCIAC girls' volleyball quarterfinals.

The two teams met in the regular season on October 5, with Warde coming out victorious in a five-set match at Fairfield University.

Friday's match was held at Ludlowe as the Falcons were the No. 4 seed, hosting the fifth seeded Mustangs.

For the second time this season, Warde came out with the victory. This time, it was a three-set sweep.

All three sets were close, however.

Warde came away with set victories of 26-24, 25-23, 25-22 to sweep the match.

The Mustangs advance to the FCIAC semifinals on Monday where they will face the top seed Greenwich at 5pm at Stamford High School.

Ludlowe will look towards the state tournament.

It's always exciting and interesting when the two schools meet in the postseason, whether that be the league tournament or state tournament.

*****

On Saturday, Ludlowe hosted Darien in football in a much-hyped matchup.

Darien took a 7-0 lead and did not look back on way to a 48-15 victory.

The Blue Waye improve to 5-1, while Ludlowe falls to 4-2.

Ludlowe's two scores came on a Justin Toothaker touchdown reception from Grant Stupak late in the first half and a Ryan Menozzi touchdown reception with 10:47 left. Ramzee Atta also hauled in a two-point conversion.

It was also a pink-out Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the football game. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and the FLHS Athletic Department and The Nest, the student fan club, co-sponsored sales of T-Shirts. The net proceeds will go to the Norma Pfreim Breast Center for Breast Cancer research.

The shirts were pink with white writing and a white Falcon. The writing said "No One Fights Alone" with the "O" in one being the breast cancer awareness ribbon.

Below the Falcon it read, "-The Nest."

Thank you to everyone who purchased a shirt. Students, faculty and staff, parents and just other fans at the game.

Breast Cancer Awareness is important, and I am happy we do events to support. However, I wish more was done, both locally and globally, around other cancers and other causes in general.

Other Cancers and causes have "months" where they get recognition, but not to the same degree.

Please don't take this as I want to take anything away from Breast Cancer Awareness. That is not what I am saying. I just wish there was more support for the others.

Overall, I would just to see more support for so many important causes.

Ludlowe Football Topples Stamford Behind Team Effort; MADD Walk

Ludlowe's offense sets up to run a play during the game vs Stamford

I said last night, I might write about football today.

Well, here I am.

Ludlowe took the trip down to Stamford to face the Black Knights at historic Michael A. Boyle Stadium, better known as just Boyle Stadium. *

*Boyle Stadium was a Work Progress Administration (WPA) project that was built starting in 1935 and named for Boyle, who was a football coach and athletic director, in 1942. (Thanks to Rob Adams for the initial history lesson on this, plus further research.)

I love this history in this. It's such great stadium to be in. And it's truly a stadium with the brick walls and the bench style seating. It's also got the press box above the stands on the visiting side. If I remember correctly, it used to be on the far (home) side.

It also always has a big-game feel, as many FCIAC Championships and other playoff and other big games are often played there.

Now, to the game.

The Falcons came away with a 26-0 victory. It was a team effort in all facets of the game.

Despite the score, the game was scoreless through one quarter.

In the second quarter, Ryan Tompkins had a touchdown run and Ryan Menozzi had a touchdown reception and Ludlowe led 13-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Stupak found Justin Toothaker for the 26-yard score to put Ludlowe on top 19-0 with 8:30 left in the quarter. Toothaker also had a third quarter interception, defensively.

In the fourth quarter, the scoring was capped when Stupak connected with Menozzi again for a 26-yard score.

While not in the scoring column, Timmy O'Neil also had some big catches for the Falcons offensively.

The Falcon defense was strong as a collective unit in pitching the shutout.

The Falcons improve to 4-1 and will be back in action next Saturday as they host Darien, who was number five in the state in the Gametime CT poll coming into this week.

The Blue Wave defeated St. Joe's 14-0 on Friday night. They will likely move up in the poll before next week, as not only did they win, but No. 3 Staples and No. 1 Greenwich both lost this week.

It will be an important game for the Falcons, as they look to keep piling up the wins in hopes of a playoff berth.

Finally, I nice job by Stamford High School Athletics with their Pink-Out and Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The entire Stamford stands were decked out in pink and there were announcements made about t-shirt sales and other items for their fundraiser.

******

Saturday night, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held a "Walk Like MADD" event at Ludlowe's Taft Field.

It was nice to see a large number of Ludlowe students, including many students' athletes, in attendance at the walk. I'm sure there were others, but I noted members of the girls' and boys' lacrosse teams, the dance team, and the baseball team among others.

So many people have been impacted by drunk driving, and it has impacted the Ludlowe community over the years.

I wasn't totally sure what to expect, but I figured I would go by and check it out and support. I always have this thought that these events are going to be larger scale than they end up being. That's not to say it wasn't done well, because it was.

There are so many important causes and charities to support. Everyone has reasons for why they support one or another. It's impossible to support them all.

For example, I know there was also an Alzheimer's walk in Fairfield at Sacred Heart University on Saturday morning.

Back to this MADD event. Nice work by Tim Morris of Ludlowe and everyone else who was involved in putting the event together and running it.

It seems like an ongoing theme of my blogs, especially recently, have been support.

Well, it was another day of supporting people, in different ways.

Supporting The Seniors

Ludlowe boys' soccer seniors 2024

I often write about days of game. Often weekends of multiple games.

I don't often write about actual work, because there's a lot I cannot say, plus, who really cares about my workday.

Then again, many people who read this may not care about the games I write about. I hope some people do.

I am burying the lead.

Friday was a busy day at Ludlowe (and Warde, although I was at Ludlowe but could have very well went to Warde for games).

It was senior day/night for not one, not two, but three teams.

Girls' volleyball, field hockey and boys' soccer.

It was also a successful day as all three teams came away with victories.

Girls' volleyball defeated Wilton in straight sets.

Field hockey took down St. Joe's 7-0. Lily McClay had three goals, Catie Leddy two and Ava Cagnassola and Ellery Walker each had a goal.

Boys' soccer defeated Bridgeport Central 2-0. Charlie Jones two goals. Cooper Sicre with a goal. Will Bostrom and Chase McCormack combine on a shutout in goal.

I watched parts of the first two, as I went back and forth as they overlapped.

I then watched all of boys' soccer.

I know I am not supposed to play favorites with teams or athletes, but....

(Please note, this blog, or my personal social media, have no affiliation the schools or my job)

The boys' soccer group is a tremendous group of kids. It's one of those groups that I've gotten to know well. First and foremost, because of the basketball and baseball players who are on the team. Also, just being in the school and then going to all the games, I have gotten to know others.

A couple thoughts on senior days/nights.

- It should be the last home game. With a few exceptions like if that last game is the rivalry game or something like that.

-It's a quick recognition of the seniors. Do more at the banquet.

Again, these are my thoughts, and I know people have a reason for the ways things are done.

Onto football tomorrow.

Maybe I will write about that. Or I won't.

We will see.

Twitter vs Instagram

Everyone knows that I am on social media a lot.

Specifically, Twitter (X), Instagram and Facebook.

Staples High School baseball coach Jack McFarland even jokes that I invented Twitter.

I use my personal accounts, as well as accounts for groups that I am involved with.

A lot of what I post on my personal social media is high school sports related.

For years, I have posted score updates on Twitter. Yes, I am still calling it that.

Well, recently, in addition to Tweeting score updates, I have started posting score updates on my Instagram story

I feel that this reaches a different, or at least a broader audience. It reaches the younger people, as well as parents who are on Instagram.

Sometimes, I will just share my Tweet to my Instagram story, other times I will share a photo of the scoreboard, or a photo of the game and I will type the score on the photo/story.

Often, I will just put the score, but sometimes, when I can, I will give who scored, or other statistics. I want to try to do better with that as it gives the athletes direct recognition.

After a day of posting a lot of updates on Instagram recently, I put up a poll to see if I should continue. The response was a resounding, yes.

I don't want to be annoying with it. So, I wanted to see what the reception was.

Twitter has changed, and even before the change, I'd hear people say they were looking for score updates but were not on Twitter. For a long time, Twitter was the go-to spot to get local score updates. Now, it seems like there are fewer and fewer updates on Twitter.

I'll keep posting on both, until told otherwise.

It's also a way to be different and stand out from others.

In terms of Facebook, sometimes I will post final scores, but more likely, people will get it from the blogs I post. Years ago, I would post in-game updates or at least final score updates on Facebook often. I remember posting in-game updates while watching the Little League World Series on TV years ago when Fairfield American was involved. Yeah, that may have been a little overboard on my end.

Different ways to use the different platforms (or mediums).

It some ways, it's about promoting ourselves and our "brand." More importantly, once again, it's about promoting the teams and athletes.

Captured By.....

The media landscape is changing. It has been for many years now.

That is not to mean that traditional media (print, radio, etc.) is dead. Traditional media is more than alive and thriving.

That said, there are a lot of new waves of media and people getting involved.

I could write about student broadcasting and journalism (writing/reporting), but not this time.

One big thing is student photography/videography and graphic design.

This is not to take away those who are professionals and have been in the field for years and do it for a living

Students are being entrepreneurs. They are taking photos and sharing them on social media, and sometimes, selling them.

Additionally, some students are creating graphics for games (gameday, final score and others) for teams to use on their social media pages.

This is a way to use their talents, promote themselves, and create a "small business."

It's very easy to do this, if you have the skills and equipment.

These kids are creating Instagram accounts such as "captured by" and then their name, or some variation or similar words.

There are good things about this, and there can be issues with this.

It's about doing it correctly.

Schools and groups can have certain rules and procedures that these members need to adhere to.

It's up to the host location/school what they want to allow and how they want to allow and enforce the rules.

Overall, if it's done correctly, students can help themselves in starting a career and provide content for their fellow students and their families who are involved in the game or activity that is being covered.

It could be a win-win for everyone.

If done right.

Coaches Day

This comes from a soccer site, but applies to all sports coaches

I know I've written about this in past years, but when I work in sports, coach sports, and the fact that my life revolves around sports, I think this is important to write about.

October 6 is National Coaches Day.

It's a day to recognize the great work coaches do for athletes.

According to NationalDayCalendar.com National Coaches Day on October 6 honors the men and women who inspire us to work harder and do our best.

I am, of course, going to take this from a local (primarily high school) perspective. This can, however, be taken from a professional perspective as well.

Personally, I have been coached by many playing youth sports, worked with coaches when I was a student manager, worked with coaches in my job, and am a coach for baseball.

I think this gives me a great perspective on what coaches really do.

It's not just about the game plan and teaching the sport.

A coach should inspire, motivate and be a role model for their athletes.

It's about being there for the men and women. Both on the field and off.

If the athletes are down, talk to them. Find out what is wrong. Is it just their sport struggles, or is there something more going on?

Be there to support them through whatever issues. Sport, school, or personal life.

Help out however you can. Even if that's just talking or being there for them.

I feel as a coach and huge supporter of the student-athletes, that is a strength of mine. I care about the student-athletes. Sometimes too much (this could be another blog post entirely, and it might be).

Support them and cheer them on during good times as well.

In terms of actually coaching, it is a coach's job to put the team they feel gives them the best chance to win out there. That doesn't mean they ignore those who aren't starting or playing. Everyone has a role. If fact, sometimes, it's more important to pay attention to those who aren't in the game. Make sure they stay focused on the game and support their team.

Every member of a coaching staff needs to know their role. The head coach is in charge. It's his or her job to delegate or not delegate duties. The head coach should make sure their assistants know what they should be doing during practices and games. It's also the job of the assistant not to overstep the head coach.

Every coach, if they are doing it for the correct reason, is in coaching for the student-athletes. The best coaches are the ones who you don't hear from and don't make it about themselves.

Thank you to all the coaches who do so much for their students-athletes. The appreciation isn't often show, but it is there.

Three Sport Saturday

Warde and Ludlowe volleyball action

It was another fun Saturday of local sports. Three games, three different sports, three different locations.

The results were a mixed bag.

First up, was Ludlowe boys soccer hosting Stamford.

The Falcons had a three 3-0 lead into the second half thanks to a hat trick from Charlie Jones.

Stamford came back with three late goals to tie the game, and the two teams would end in a three all tie.

I actually left with like 20 minutes or so (maybe a little more) to go in the game with Ludlowe up 3-0. That being said #BlameShawn. Part of this was due to Stamford arriving late due to traffic and therefore the game starting late.

I left to get over to Fairfield University where Warde and Ludlowe girls' volleyball were playing at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena.

It was a terrific volleyball match, with Warde winning in five sets. Lots of great rallies and plays by both teams.

Warde took the first set, 25-22.

The second set went in Ludlowe's favor, 25-19.

Just like the first set, Warde came up to take the third, 25-22.

Ludlowe tied up the match with a 25-19 score in set 4.

I am sensing a theme here. Or consistency.

In the fifth and decisive set, Warde took it 15-11.

Warde sophomore Laila Henry recorded the 1,000th assist of her career in the third set. After she got the assist, Warde head coach Matt Narwold called a timeout to give Henry the recognition. A sign was brought out and it was announced over the PA.

I love when records are kept and when the accomplishments are recognized. I always say this, but I wish more of it was done across all sports at all schools.

While it was great to play the game at a venue like the Mahoney Arena, I wish more people came out to support. That is one issue with playing in a bigger venue, versus playing in a high school gym. However, a gym like Warde is much bigger than a gym like Ludlowe.

That said, it's still cool to play in a college arena. I was impressed that the scoreboard was in use, and there was a public address announcer. This is what all games should have, no matter then venue. I just wasn't sure what Fairfield University would provide or let the teams have access to.

Great job by everyone who was involved in putting the day and event together. Another great Ludlowe/Warde game and event for the town.

Congrats to Matt Narwold and the Warde volleyball team on the victory.

Matt is a great coach and an even better person. Someone I've known in various capacities since he was my camp counselor many years ago. Always happy to root for his success. (Always love watching his intensity as he coaches).

Finally, it was off to New Canaan as the Rams hosted Ludlowe in football.

New Canaan, a perennial power in the league and state, came into the game with a 2-1 record. Ludlowe came in with a record of 3-0. With no disrespect to their previous opponents, a lot of people (including those in the media) were talking about this being the first real big test for the Falcons.

In the end, New Canaan came away with a 30-14 victory. While it's still a loss, Ludlowe hung tough and did a lot of positive things.

Liam Bond had two touchdown runs for the Falcons. Defensively, Cooper Seek had a big game, with an interception, multiple sacks and tackles for losses. Seek was all over the field making plays for the Ludlowe defense to keep them in the game.

It was a long, somewhat crazy day. But always fun to get out and watch games and support the athletes, coaches and teams (this seems like a theme. Maybe a separate blog post here soon).

A new week of games awaits.

New York Home Runs

Sports fans love to debate and love lists (which they can debate)

After Pete Alonso's game-winning home run on Thursday night in the third and decisive game of the NL Wild Card round for the Mets against the Brewers, there is a new discussion today.

Biggest/best game-winning home runs in New York History.

Don LaGreca of ESPN Radio and The Michael Kay Show, gave his top five on the show.

Number 1 - Agreed. I mean, it's called "The Shot Heard Round the World" for a reason. It was a walk-off to the Giants the pennant.

Number 2 - No. Should be lower. It won them the wild card round and was a go-ahead game winner, but not a walk-off (granted, that's because they were the road team).

Number 3 - Should probably be number two. It not only sent the Yankees to the World Series, but it came in extra innings to the rival Red Sox. The Yankees, however, would fall to the Florida Marlins in the Fall Classic.

Number 4 - Just like number three, it sent the Yankees to the World Series. This one should be higher on the list too. Just like 2003 though, the Yankees did not go on to win the World Series, as they were swept by the Cincinatti Reds and The Big Red Machine. You could debate this and Boone as number two or three, in my opinion. Both in the LCS and both years the Yankees went on to lose in the World Series.

Number 5 - Is this really memorable? Not in my mind. Yes, it was in the playoffs but still would not have it in the top five.

Okay, now what is missing, in my opinion?

- Scott Brosius in the 1998 World Series against the Padres. Specifically, the go-ahead home run in game three off of Trevor Hoffman.

- Brosius again in 2001 against the Diamondbacks to tie game five.

- Tino Martinez the night before Brosius to tie game four.

- Let's move to later the night after Tino's home run. Well, really, it was the next morning. Later in game four, Derek Jeter became Mr. November with his walk-off in game four in 2001.

Let's stay in 2001 but go back a few weeks and head from the Bronx to Queens.

September 21, 2001. Ten days after the September 11 attacks when Mike Piazza homered off Steve Karsay to give the Mets a 3-2 lead over the Braves in the eighth inning in the first game back in New York. I know this wasn't postseason, but it was so much more than sports.

Those are my thoughts on Don's list and others I think of when I think about New York home runs. I am sure I am forgetting others too.

Thoughts?

Everyone can have their own opinion. Debating makes sports fun.

******

Side note, and I know this is a very unpopular opinion. I don't think Howie Rose's call of the home run on the radio was a very good call. He yells and talks to much.

Lay out and let it breath. Let the listener head the crowd noise.

Now, I will say, I thought all the description that Rose gave was great for a radio call.

When I think of Rose's calls, the two that automatically come to mind are Stefane Matteau for the New York Rangers against the Devils in the 1994 playoffs and the aforementioned Piazza post-9/11 home run for the Mets against the Braves.

In the Matteau call, it's a lot of screaming. On the Piazza home run call, he lays out more and lets the listener hear the crowd noise before talking again.

I love the excitement in the Matteau call, but sometimes, it can be too much.

With Piazza, Rose knew the moment and knew what it meant to the fans, and everyone in New York and wanted to let those listening hear it.

***********

I love talking sports, especially baseball, and sports and baseball broadcasting as well.

Looking forward to watching what the Mets and Yankees do in the playoffs.

Subway Series? Maybe. People are already talking.

For now, game ones in the ALDS and NLDS on Saturday.

Warde/Ludlowe Soccer: Mustangs Edge Falcons in Girls Game; Boys Play to Scoreless Tie

Tuesday night was the annual Ludlowe/Warde boys and girls soccer doubleheader.

The games are doubleheaders each year, but the location rotates between the two schools each year and the team who plays first and second rotates in some fashion as well.

This year, the boys played the first game and the girls the second game.

The boys game ended in a scoreless draw. Both teams had chances but couldn't convert anything. Solid goaltending from Ludlowe's Chase McCormack and Warde's Gabriel Tiene.

Warde retains the Swedish Cup, having won in 2023.

In the girls' game, Warde won 1-0 to retain the FUSA Cup. The two teams tied in 2023 and Warde won the regular season matchup in 2022 (they also faced off in the postseason that year, with Ludlowe coming out victorious).

The Mustangs goal came early on in the game, as Paige Shaughnessy found the back of the net. Ludlowe had their chances but couldn't push anything across.

It was another solid night for the town and the two schools. It's always special for the entire town to see what great athletes and people are across town. It's also a community event with the youth players and just casual fans coming out to support.

Ludlowe Doubleheader Sport Saturday

Ludlowe soccer handshake line following Saturday's win.

Saturday was a long, busy day at Ludlowe. But a fun day.

Let me first put this disclaimer. I don't have to be at most games. Other than sort of with my Nest advisor role and games I work, separate from my real job. I go because I enjoy sports and like to support these kids, families and teams. That's not to make me sound great or anything, just to explain something that is misunderstood by a lot of people, because I am at so many games, but not at others.

First up was the boys' soccer game vs St. Joe's.

Ludlowe came away with a 3-0 victory to improve their record to 6-1 on the season.

The Falcon goals came from Ian Moore, Luke DiLillo and Timmy Bennett. Chase McCormack and Will Bostrom combined on a shutout in goal.

It's rivalry week up next as Ludlowe will face Warde in soccer on Tuesday at Ludlowe. The boys' game is at 5pm, with the girls to follow at 7pm.

After the soccer game, and a short break, it was on to football.

The game versus Bridgeport Central was originally scheduled for Friday night but got moved to Saturday to due schools being closed in Bridgeport on Friday due to social media threats in the Bridgeport Schools.

Ludlowe did what they needed to do and came away with a convincing win to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Next up, they travel to Notre Dame of West Haven on Friday night.  Two more road games after that, at New Canaan and Stamford, before returning home on October 26, to face Darien.

Thanks to FLHS parent Scott Torello for filling in on the PA for the football game. Very solid job done by Scott.

Shoutout to FLHS Site Director Frank Anile-Santiago on a terrific job all day.

And the rest of the crew, led by Athletic Director Todd Parness. Art Cockerham, Justin Tomczyk, Chris Kearney, Craig DeAngelis and Mel Sulich, among others.

I say I won't write about the high school sports I am at all the time, but that is so much of my life other than actual work, which is high school sports. Hopefully I will write about other topics and write more soon.

2024 Football Opener

Ludlowe/NFA Football Action

High school fall sports are off and running in Connecticut.

Friday night was the opening night of football in Fairfield at Ludlowe.

Lots of excitement and optimism in the air.

It went extremely well for the home team.

The Falcons came away with a 53-7 win over Norwich Free Academy.

Ludlowe got contributions across the board. Too many to name all off hand, but early touchdowns from Justin Toothaker and Ryan Tompkins was more than enough.

It was 31-0 after one quarter and 47-0 at halftime. Not a whole lot more to say. Just a dominant performance from the Falcons.

I should start to mark down who does what so I can give everyone the credit they deserve. There's just so much going on and I am not always in a position where I am able.

The last two years I was on the scoreboard. This year, we hired a referee clock operator. That meant I was back on Nest control and overall, just being around. Let's leave that right there. The less I say the better.

Again, it's about the kids. The student-athletes. The student fans. The parents and all the other fans. It's about the experience. Having fun, while being safe.

Great job by everyone.

Ludlowe is back at home next Friday as they host Bridgeport Central at 6pm.

----------------------

As for Warde, they came away with a 20-6 win at Harding. The first win for Christian Parisi as head coach of the Mustangs.

Warde is back in action next Friday with the home opener at 6pm against New Canaan.

--------------------

Earlier in the day at Ludlowe, the fall Pep Rally was held.

Great job by the Nest leaders, the sports captains, and all the other group leaders who were a part of it. It's about getting excited about the school events and having pride in the school. As well as everyone supporting their classmates.

Nice work by the cheerleading team, dance team, and pep band with their performances as well. A full school affair

Where Were You?

Where were you "when the world stopped turning" 23 years ago.

September 11, 2001.

The attacks on our country.

The World Trade Center

The Pentagon

Shanksville, PA.

The day the world changed. In so many ways.

For people my age, it's the worst tragedy and biggest news story of our lifetime.

This is what JFK's Assassination or Pearl Harbor, among other events are to those older than me.

I tell this story ever year, but, like so many, we think about where we were when we heard the news. That is what happens with national or world news.

Twenty-three years ago, I was in first grade at Riverfield Elementary School.

We were in morning meeting in Ms. K's class when Mrs. Sue Breisler (who is now a colleague) came into the classroom to tell Ms. K what had happened.

I don't remember what happened in the immediate aftermath, other than I presume there was some type of announcement made about us being dismissed from school early.

The next thing I remember was getting dismissed and my dad, who worked in Farmington, CT, meeting my mom, brother and I at the school. From there, we went home. A very weird memory that doesn't matter at all, was being on the wooden playground (that was replaced shortly thereafter) in the school yard.

I have a very vague memory of the rest of that day, or the days following. I have heard many stories and read and watched many items on the events of that Tuesday and the days and months following.

On a day like today, I think of my extended family in Law Enforcement.

I also think about my cousins, who lost their cousin, who was working in the North Tower of the Trade Centers.

We remember all those who lost their lives that day and those who have passed away in the years since then, due to that day. We also think of all the family members impacted.

It's about the First Responders and the regular citizens.

Furthermore, I remember going to the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey in early 2002 and from the observation deck you could see across the Hudson River and see the blue tribute lights where the towers stood. This is a powerful image for me.

We use the phrase, Never Forget, which honestly sounds cliche, but it's so true. We will never forget the memories of that day, and the people who were lost and the impact that day had.

We remember

We honor

We Never Forget

Ludlowe Football Murph Challenge

The players get ready to start the initial one-mile run.

The Ludlowe football team participated in the Murph Challenge on Sunday at Ludlowe High School's Taft Field.

The Murph Challenge for those who don't know (and I had to look it up) is a cross fit physical challenge that honor the life of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2005.

The challenge raises funds to help those wounded in war. Each player got donations from family and friends that goes towards the cause.

The Murph Challenge consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and then finishes up another one-mile run.

It's normally done on Memorial Day, but it's never a bad time to support a great cause and was a good season kick-off event.

Prior to the physical part of the event starting, veteran Earl Granville spoke to the players and everyone else in attendance about his story and what the event means.

Most importantly, a great job by all the players who participated. It was the entire program, from freshman through seniors.

Credit as well to all those who were involved in making the event at Ludlowe happen. I am sure I am going to miss people, but these are who I know of. Kristen Morrison, Dan Seek, Kristen Frame, Robin Charron, Jeff Love, along with all the coaches and many others.

Fall Sports Time

Ludlowe/Norwalk football November 3, 2023 (SS Photo)

It's time for another high school sports year, and another school year.

While school in Fairfield in still almost two weeks away, fall sports are getting underway.

Boys golf began this past Monday, football begins on Thursday, and the rest of the fall sports begin next Monday.

I'm excited for sports to be back and people to be back around the schools. It's been too quiet this summer. It was nice to have some more staff back today and even more over the next several days.

I'm looking forward to watching games and supporting the student-athletes.

The fall sports season is a long season this year, with fall sports starting at least a week earlier than normal, and Thanksgiving being on the later side.

Of course, I want success for all our teams. But yes, certain teams I have a soft spot for. Even in the sports I'm not as involved with, I follow the people I know. Often those are baseball and basketball guys, or those who have been a part of those programs at one time or another.

Those bonds go beyond the specific sport. It's just that certain sports or teams are how the friendships are created.

Every year is different. It's become about expecting the unexpected and preparing for things not to go as planned. If they do go as planned, that's a bonus. And this is from someone who hates change.

We will have a few weeks of tryouts and practices before games get going. I can't wait for games to start.

Good luck to everyone trying out for teams, and to all the players and coaches on the start of the season.

Let's get it going!

********

Good luck to all those who graduated last spring and are heading off to college in the next few weeks. I've talked at nauseum about what that class means to me. Best of luck to all!

Statistics

Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination. - Vin Scully

Statistics, or stats, are an interesting thing. They are what you make of them.

I love sports statistics.

I love being that "stat person" doing a scorebook* and looking at and compiling stats. I enjoy going back through books, days, months or even years later and looking at the stats. Yes, some of it is nostalgia.

I've written about scorekeeping before.

*Yes, I am good with baseball, and okay with basketball. I need to get better with doing stats in game for other sports.

That said, I don't need all the fancy, new-age stats, for the most part.

There is a time and place for them.

For coaches, stats only tell part of the story. The eye test to see how a player is performing is also part of it.

In baseball, you can hit four live drives and be 0-4 and someone else can hit four soft bloopers and be 4-4.

Now, people who are totally stat driven will say this is where exit velocity and launch angle and things of that nature matter. I get it, but I do not need numbers for everything. I can tell by what I watch.

As Vin Scully said in the quote above, statistics are good to have for a broadcast, but don't need to be relied on. They are good to fit in spots.

Often, especially at the high school and youth levels, they are non-existent. If you get them, it's a luxury. Certain teams have and share more than others, so it all depends on the program.

This is why stories are important for broadcasting. There needs to be something besides just the straight play-by-play of what is happening in the game. Otherwise, it sounds boring and there can often be too much dead air.

I talk a lot about stats in regard to baseball here, but it applies to all sports. It just seems like baseball is the sport where the stats are the most prevalent. Or maybe it's just that I am a baseball person. Or that I am in a baseball mode right now. Or both.

Overall, stats are great, if used in the correct way.
