Fun Night in Trumbull

We've talked on here before about the friendships and people we get to know through being involved in sports in many different ways. It extends to the friendships that develop because of sports but last forever. 

I've also written about all of the summer baseball coverage I've been involved with over the years. Whether that be Little League, American Legion, College Summer League or Babe Ruth. 

A lot of that over the last several years has been Trumbull Babe Ruth. Trumbull has become a town I've really enjoyed dealing with, and most of that is because of the great people. 

It's all the staff, coaches, players and families that we have interacted with. 

That leads me to Friday night where Ludlowe was playing Trumbull in football at Trumbull High School. I love when we get Fairfield vs Trumbull games in any sport. As I wrote on Instagram, it's "my guys" vs "my other guys." 

Its people involved with Trumbull like Mike Buswell, Brayden Jagoe and Luke McDermott to name a few, and the families. 

It was good to chat with Mike during the game and to watch Jagoe play* (McDermott is hurt, speedy recovery to Luke) and talk to him for a quick second afterwards. 

Ludlowe came away with a 35-7 victory behind four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) from Ryan Love. Peyton Sparacino also had a passing touchdown. Jake Palladino had two touchdown receptions, and Jack Danylko and Timmy O'Neill each had a touchdown catch. 

*Brayden had the lone Eagles touchdown, a 56-yard run. Happy to see these guys having success. When Ludlowe played Trumbull in baseball this past spring, Jagoe homered. Obviously, I'm rooting for Ludlowe, but I also want these other guys to do well. 

There were other people, including former Ludlowe and Trumbull coach and Trumbull football player, Mat Lena, who it was nice to catch up with. There were also people who I wish I would have gotten to see. 

I root for good people and good stories, and these are all great people!

Ludlowe/Warde Football - Thanksgiving 2024

Thanksgiving was once again the annual Ludlowe vs Warde football game. 

The weather forecast was calling for rain so there was much discussion in the days prior about moving the game to Wednesday. 

This was done in 2018 due to freezing temperatures predicted for Thanksgiving, but the game is normally on Thanksgiving Day. 

Normally, I am totally against moving it. I'm a traditionalist and like Thanksgiving football. 

However, this year, I would have been okay with-it being Wednesday. With no disrespect intended to the teams', Thanksgiving football is as much about the game as it is a community event. 

That said, I have no say. 

The game stayed on Thanksgiving Day, and it did in fact rain. In fact, all the games in the FCIAC that were scheduled for Thanksgiving Day stayed on that day. The weather definitely kept the crowd down, which is unfortunate. I am okay with the game staying on Thanksgiving though. 

Okay, I've buried the lede. 

Ludlowe came out with a 38-16 victory. The win clinches Ludlowe a spot in the Class L playoffs, where they will face Darien on Tuesday. Time to be determined. 

It's the first playoff appearance for Ludlowe football in school history in the post Fairfield High School era. 

The Falcons also finish the regular season, with an 8-2 record, the best in program history. 

Liam Bond, who had four rushing touchdowns, was named the Ludlowe MVP. Quinn Russo was the Warde MVP of the game. 

The MVPs are presented with a trophy and receive a scholarship from the Fairfield Rotary Club. Thanks to Bill Llewllyn and Bruce Carter from the Fairfield Rotary Club for recognizing our student-athletes. 

I also have to say, personally, I am a fan of formal post-game ceremonies, which I don't feel like always get done. This year, however, it was done well. 

First, the MVPs were brought together with Carter and a cheerleading from each team. It was Gabby DiGiacomo from Warde and Susana Charron from Ludlowe. The cheerleaders then handed the MVP's their trophy with Carter nearby. Both teams were also surrounding all of them at mid-field.

Then, with both teams still near mid-field, Ludlowe Athletic Director Todd Parness presented the Gallagher-Baynas Trophy to the Ludlowe captains, Cooper Seek, Ryan Menozzi, Ryan Tompkins and Ramzee Atta. 

Now it's on to Tuesday for Ludlowe football and then winter sports will be here soon. 

A #OneTown Football Friday

It was a #OneTown football Friday, despites the teams not playing each other and the games being played in different towns. 

First, I was at Warde to do tickets for their home game against Darien. I left that game at halftime with Darien on top 35-0. The Blue Wave came away with a 49-7 victory. 

Some people might question when am mentioning the score. It's just stating information and it's still important to report. 

After leading Warde at halftime, I headed down to Brien McMahon in Norwalk for Ludlowe's game with Norwalk High School. 

Norwalk High is playing their home games at McMahon this season, and for the next couple seasons, likely, as the new Norwalk High School is being built on the grounds of the former Sam Testa Field on the current Norwalk HS campus. 

I got down there at the end of the first quarter with Ludlowe already on top 20-7 thanks to three Liam Bond touchdowns. Bond would finish with four touchdowns on the night as Ludlowe came out on top 52-21. 

Justin Toothaker had multiple touchdowns on the evening as well. 

Ludlowe vs Norwalk is also a matchup featuring a former/current Falcon as well as another former Falcon. 

Mike Forget, former Ludlowe football head coach and current FLHS PE teacher is the Bears head coach. Sydney Ciuffo (formerly Judkins) is the former Ludlowe Athletic Trainer, now at Norwalk. 

Ludlowe improves to 7-2, tying the record for most wins in school history. 

While I believe unofficial at this point, tonight's win all but clinches a playoff spot for Ludlowe. 

Next up Warde and Ludlowe will face off on Thanksgiving at 10am at Ludlowe. 

Postseason Soccer Friday

It's another weekend of writing about local high school games I was at. 

Most of you will likely stop reading now. 

Friday was another busy sports afternoon and evening. 

Ludlowe hosted girls' and boys' soccer CIAC (State) Class LL first round games as the higher seeds. 

The girls hosted Warde, so it's always interesting when you get the cross-town matchup in a postseason game, especially a state tournament game. 

It's unfortunate that it was a first-round matchup and not later in the tournament. 

You know that one team's season is coming to an end. We always want to see all out teams make deep postseason runs. 

On the contrary, I know from a work perspective, we will have a team advancing.  

Warde came out on top with a 2-0 victory. Both goals came from senior Paige Shaughnessy. 

The Mustangs advance to the 2nd round where they will play at Manchester at 4pm on Monday. 

Next up was the Ludlowe boys hosting Wilbur Cross. 

It was a matchup of intense physicality and emotion. 

Both teams had opportunities, but neither would put a goal in net in regulation. 

That sent the game to overtime. Again, neither team would score in either of the 10-minute overtime sessions. 

The game would go into penalty kicks. 

There, Wilbur Cross would edge Ludlowe 5-4 in PK's. 

I try to support all our athletes, but as I've stated many times, this boys' soccer team is a special group for me. Led by Charlie Jones, Ian Moore, Kenny Luczaj and Luke Dilillo. But it's more than that, it's Chase McCormack, Chase Mehta, Brendan Walsh and others. I know I shouldn't list people, because then I am leaving people out. 

Additionally, the Ludlowe football team was playing at McMahon. This game was going on at the same time as boys' soccer, so I stayed at Ludlowe for soccer while following football via text and the live stream. 

The Falcons defeated McMahon 27-21 behind four Ryan Tompkins touchdowns. 

Ludlowe improves to 5-2 and will host Wilton on Friday. 

Looking ahead, the fall season is quickly winding down. Winter sports will be here soon. 

Volleyball Friday, Football Saturday and Supporting Important Causes

Ludlowe/Warde girls' volleyball FCIAC quarterfinal action

It's pretty clear what games I was at this weekend, based on the title of this blog post. 

On Friday, Ludlowe and Warde faced off in the FCIAC girls' volleyball quarterfinals.

The two teams met in the regular season on October 5, with Warde coming out victorious in a five-set match at Fairfield University. 

Friday's match was held at Ludlowe as the Falcons were the No. 4 seed, hosting the fifth seeded Mustangs. 

For the second time this season, Warde came out with the victory. This time, it was a three-set sweep. 

All three sets were close, however. 

Warde came away with set victories of 26-24, 25-23, 25-22 to sweep the match. 

The Mustangs advance to the FCIAC semifinals on Monday where they will face the top seed Greenwich at 5pm at Stamford High School. 

Ludlowe will look towards the state tournament. 

It's always exciting and interesting when the two schools meet in the postseason, whether that be the league tournament or state tournament.

On Saturday, Ludlowe hosted Darien in football in a much-hyped matchup. 

Darien took a 7-0 lead and did not look back on way to a 48-15 victory. 

The Blue Waye improve to 5-1, while Ludlowe falls to 4-2. 

Ludlowe's two scores came on a Justin Toothaker touchdown reception from Grant Stupak late in the first half and a Ryan Menozzi touchdown reception with 10:47 left. Ramzee Atta also hauled in a two-point conversion. 

It was also a pink-out Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the football game. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and the FLHS Athletic Department and The Nest, the student fan club, co-sponsored sales of T-Shirts. The net proceeds will go to the Norma Pfreim Breast Center for Breast Cancer research. 

The shirts were pink with white writing and a white Falcon. The writing said "No One Fights Alone" with the "O" in one being the breast cancer awareness ribbon. 

Below the Falcon it read, "-The Nest." 

Thank you to everyone who purchased a shirt. Students, faculty and staff, parents and just other fans at the game. 

Breast Cancer Awareness is important, and I am happy we do events to support. However, I wish more was done, both locally and globally, around other cancers and other causes in general. 

Other Cancers and causes have "months" where they get recognition, but not to the same degree. 

Please don't take this as I want to take anything away from Breast Cancer Awareness. That is not what I am saying. I just wish there was more support for the others. 

Overall, I would just to see more support for so many important causes. 

Ludlowe Football Topples Stamford Behind Team Effort; MADD Walk

I said last night, I might write about football today. 

Well, here I am. 

Ludlowe took the trip down to Stamford to face the Black Knights at historic Michael A. Boyle Stadium, better known as just Boyle Stadium. *

*Boyle Stadium was a Work Progress Administration (WPA) project that was built starting in 1935 and named for Boyle, who was a football coach and athletic director, in 1942. (Thanks to Rob Adams for the initial history lesson on this, plus further research.) 

I love this history in this. It's such great stadium to be in. And it's truly a stadium with the brick walls and the bench style seating. It's also got the press box above the stands on the visiting side. If I remember correctly, it used to be on the far (home) side. 

It also always has a big-game feel, as many FCIAC Championships and other playoff and other big games are often played there. 

Now, to the game. 

The Falcons came away with a 26-0 victory. It was a team effort in all facets of the game. 

Despite the score, the game was scoreless through one quarter. 

In the second quarter, Ryan Tompkins had a touchdown run and Ryan Menozzi had a touchdown reception and Ludlowe led 13-0 at halftime. 

In the third quarter, Stupak found Justin Toothaker for the 26-yard score to put Ludlowe on top 19-0 with 8:30 left in the quarter. Toothaker also had a third quarter interception, defensively. 

In the fourth quarter, the scoring was capped when Stupak connected with Menozzi again for a 26-yard score. 

While not in the scoring column, Timmy O'Neil also had some big catches for the Falcons offensively. 

The Falcon defense was strong as a collective unit in pitching the shutout. 

The Falcons improve to 4-1 and will be back in action next Saturday as they host Darien, who was number five in the state in the Gametime CT poll coming into this week. 

The Blue Wave defeated St. Joe's 14-0 on Friday night. They will likely move up in the poll before next week, as not only did they win, but No. 3 Staples and No. 1 Greenwich both lost this week. 

It will be an important game for the Falcons, as they look to keep piling up the wins in hopes of a playoff berth. 

Finally, I nice job by Stamford High School Athletics with their Pink-Out and Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The entire Stamford stands were decked out in pink and there were announcements made about t-shirt sales and other items for their fundraiser.

Saturday night, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held a "Walk Like MADD" event at Ludlowe's Taft Field. 

You can read more about MADD here. 

It was nice to see a large number of Ludlowe students, including many students' athletes, in attendance at the walk. I'm sure there were others, but I noted members of the girls' and boys' lacrosse teams, the dance team, and the baseball team among others. 

So many people have been impacted by drunk driving, and it has impacted the Ludlowe community over the years. 

I wasn't totally sure what to expect, but I figured I would go by and check it out and support. I always have this thought that these events are going to be larger scale than they end up being. That's not to say it wasn't done well, because it was. 

There are so many important causes and charities to support. Everyone has reasons for why they support one or another. It's impossible to support them all. 

For example, I know there was also an Alzheimer's walk in Fairfield at Sacred Heart University on Saturday morning. 

Back to this MADD event. Nice work by Tim Morris of Ludlowe and everyone else who was involved in putting the event together and running it. 

It seems like an ongoing theme of my blogs, especially recently, have been support. 

Well, it was another day of supporting people, in different ways.

Three Sport Saturday

Warde and Ludlowe volleyball action

It was another fun Saturday of local sports. Three games, three different sports, three different locations. 

The results were a mixed bag. 

First up, was Ludlowe boys soccer hosting Stamford. 

The Falcons had a three 3-0 lead into the second half thanks to a hat trick from Charlie Jones. 

Stamford came back with three late goals to tie the game, and the two teams would end in a three all tie. 

I actually left with like 20 minutes or so (maybe a little more) to go in the game with Ludlowe up 3-0. That being said #BlameShawn. Part of this was due to Stamford arriving late due to traffic and therefore the game starting late. 

I left to get over to Fairfield University where Warde and Ludlowe girls' volleyball were playing at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. 

It was a terrific volleyball match, with Warde winning in five sets. Lots of great rallies and plays by both teams. 

Warde took the first set, 25-22. 

The second set went in Ludlowe's favor, 25-19. 

Just like the first set, Warde came up to take the third, 25-22. 

Ludlowe tied up the match with a 25-19 score in set 4. 

I am sensing a theme here. Or consistency. 

In the fifth and decisive set, Warde took it 15-11. 

Warde sophomore Laila Henry recorded the 1,000th assist of her career in the third set. After she got the assist, Warde head coach Matt Narwold called a timeout to give Henry the recognition. A sign was brought out and it was announced over the PA. 

I love when records are kept and when the accomplishments are recognized. I always say this, but I wish more of it was done across all sports at all schools.  

While it was great to play the game at a venue like the Mahoney Arena, I wish more people came out to support. That is one issue with playing in a bigger venue, versus playing in a high school gym. However, a gym like Warde is much bigger than a gym like Ludlowe. 

That said, it's still cool to play in a college arena. I was impressed that the scoreboard was in use, and there was a public address announcer. This is what all games should have, no matter then venue. I just wasn't sure what Fairfield University would provide or let the teams have access to. 

Great job by everyone who was involved in putting the day and event together. Another great Ludlowe/Warde game and event for the town. 

Congrats to Matt Narwold and the Warde volleyball team on the victory. 

Matt is a great coach and an even better person. Someone I've known in various capacities since he was my camp counselor many years ago. Always happy to root for his success. (Always love watching his intensity as he coaches). 

Finally, it was off to New Canaan as the Rams hosted Ludlowe in football. 

New Canaan, a perennial power in the league and state, came into the game with a 2-1 record. Ludlowe came in with a record of 3-0. With no disrespect to their previous opponents, a lot of people (including those in the media) were talking about this being the first real big test for the Falcons. 

In the end, New Canaan came away with a 30-14 victory. While it's still a loss, Ludlowe hung tough and did a lot of positive things. 

Liam Bond had two touchdown runs for the Falcons. Defensively, Cooper Seek had a big game, with an interception, multiple sacks and tackles for losses. Seek was all over the field making plays for the Ludlowe defense to keep them in the game. 

It was a long, somewhat crazy day. But always fun to get out and watch games and support the athletes, coaches and teams (this seems like a theme. Maybe a separate blog post here soon). 

A new week of games awaits. 

Ludlowe Doubleheader Sport Saturday

Saturday was a long, busy day at Ludlowe. But a fun day. 

Let me first put this disclaimer. I don't have to be at most games. Other than sort of with my Nest advisor role and games I work, separate from my real job. I go because I enjoy sports and like to support these kids, families and teams. That's not to make me sound great or anything, just to explain something that is misunderstood by a lot of people, because I am at so many games, but not at others. 

First up was the boys' soccer game vs St. Joe's. 

Ludlowe came away with a 3-0 victory to improve their record to 6-1 on the season. 

The Falcon goals came from Ian Moore, Luke DiLillo and Timmy Bennett. Chase McCormack and Will Bostrom combined on a shutout in goal. 

It's rivalry week up next as Ludlowe will face Warde in soccer on Tuesday at Ludlowe. The boys' game is at 5pm, with the girls to follow at 7pm. 

After the soccer game, and a short break, it was on to football. 

The game versus Bridgeport Central was originally scheduled for Friday night but got moved to Saturday to due schools being closed in Bridgeport on Friday due to social media threats in the Bridgeport Schools.

Ludlowe did what they needed to do and came away with a convincing win to improve to 2-0 on the season. 

Next up, they travel to Notre Dame of West Haven on Friday night.  Two more road games after that, at New Canaan and Stamford, before returning home on October 26, to face Darien. 

Thanks to FLHS parent Scott Torello for filling in on the PA for the football game. Very solid job done by Scott. 

Shoutout to FLHS Site Director Frank Anile-Santiago on a terrific job all day. 

And the rest of the crew, led by Athletic Director Todd Parness. Art Cockerham, Justin Tomczyk, Chris Kearney, Craig DeAngelis and Mel Sulich, among others. 

I say I won't write about the high school sports I am at all the time, but that is so much of my life other than actual work, which is high school sports. Hopefully I will write about other topics and write more soon. 

2024 Football Opener

Ludlowe/NFA Football Action 

High school fall sports are off and running in Connecticut. 

Friday night was the opening night of football in Fairfield at Ludlowe. 

Lots of excitement and optimism in the air. 

It went extremely well for the home team. 

The Falcons came away with a 53-7 win over Norwich Free Academy. 

Ludlowe got contributions across the board. Too many to name all off hand, but early touchdowns from Justin Toothaker and Ryan Tompkins was more than enough. 

It was 31-0 after one quarter and 47-0 at halftime. Not a whole lot more to say. Just a dominant performance from the Falcons. 

I should start to mark down who does what so I can give everyone the credit they deserve. There's just so much going on and I am not always in a position where I am able. 

The last two years I was on the scoreboard. This year, we hired a referee clock operator. That meant I was back on Nest control and overall, just being around. Let's leave that right there. The less I say the better. 

Again, it's about the kids. The student-athletes. The student fans. The parents and all the other fans. It's about the experience. Having fun, while being safe. 

Great job by everyone. 

Ludlowe is back at home next Friday as they host Bridgeport Central at 6pm.

As for Warde, they came away with a 20-6 win at Harding. The first win for Christian Parisi as head coach of the Mustangs. 

Warde is back in action next Friday with the home opener at 6pm against New Canaan.

Earlier in the day at Ludlowe, the fall Pep Rally was held. 

Great job by the Nest leaders, the sports captains, and all the other group leaders who were a part of it. It's about getting excited about the school events and having pride in the school. As well as everyone supporting their classmates. 

Nice work by the cheerleading team, dance team, and pep band with their performances as well. A full school affair

Ludlowe Football Murph Challenge

The players get ready to start the initial one-mile run. 

The Ludlowe football team participated in the Murph Challenge on Sunday at Ludlowe High School's Taft Field. 

The Murph Challenge for those who don't know (and I had to look it up) is a cross fit physical challenge that honor the life of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2005. 

The challenge raises funds to help those wounded in war. Each player got donations from family and friends that goes towards the cause. 

The Murph Challenge consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and then finishes up another one-mile run. 

It's normally done on Memorial Day, but it's never a bad time to support a great cause and was a good season kick-off event. 

Prior to the physical part of the event starting, veteran Earl Granville spoke to the players and everyone else in attendance about his story and what the event means.  

Most importantly, a great job by all the players who participated. It was the entire program, from freshman through seniors. 

Credit as well to all those who were involved in making the event at Ludlowe happen. I am sure I am going to miss people, but these are who I know of. Kristen Morrison, Dan Seek, Kristen Frame, Robin Charron, Jeff Love, along with all the coaches and many others.

Sports Moments of '23

Well, we've come to the end of another year. 

There are always things happening, so who knows what a normal year is anymore.  Every year has its ups and downs. Some events that happen are more public and others are more private. It depends on the event and the people involved. 

I know people don't like to do rankings/lists. It's easy content and not very rich content. 

Well, I'm still going to list my top local games of 2023. I'm going to try to add some commentary with each game and not just list. As I say ever year, these are only games I was at, and I'm sure I missed some. Also, these are listed in order of date, not by ranking. Every moment and game are different, I didn't feel like I should rank them. 

 Not surprising, I have a lot of baseball listed. 

On to 2024, which will hopefully bring a lot more highlights. 

Here we go. These are my top games of the year. Let me know your thoughts and what I may have missed. 

February 23 - Ludlowe Girls Basketball Wins FCIAC Championship

Following a perfect regular season, the Ludlowe girls' basketball team won the FCIAC Championship, 52-42 over St. Joseph. It was the first girls' basketball championship in school history. 

Ludlowe would finish the season 26-1, with the only loss coming in the state championship.

May 8 - Ludlowe/Warde baseball

Warde 8 Ludlowe 2 in 10 innings. The game was much closer than the score. 

Ludlowe held a 2-1 lead into the seventh before Warde tied it with two outs on a single by Paddy Galvin. Game remained scoreless until Warde look the lead in the tenth on a Carson Swaim three-run double and added three more to break the game open. 

Incredible game. Great game for the town and baseball in a great baseball town. #OneTown 

 As a Ludlowe coach, and working at both schools, a tough loss. 

Thanks as always to Rob Adams for broadcasting this game. I often try to get Rob on Ludlowe games, and especially Ludlowe/Warde games, so I like when we can make it work out. 

May 25 - Warde baseball wins FCIAC Championship for third year in a row

For the third season in a row, the Warde baseball team won the FCIAC Championship. This year, they defeated Westhill 6-1.

Warde baseball also repeated as state champions on June 10 in an incredible game against Staples, but I was not in attendance, so that is why that game was not included. 

May 31 - Ludlowe/Hamden Baseball

I wrote about this a little bit in my season ending blog post. It was a state playoff first round game, and we (Ludlowe) were trailing Hamden 4-0 in the fourth inning. 

With the bases loaded and one out, Ben Crawford, who had not played all season due to injury, came up to pinch-hit. Crawford drove the first pitch he saw off the wall in right-center field for a bases-clearing double. Awesome moment. And I'm only telling part of the story on purpose.

June 3 - Jimmy Dobbs walk-off hit for Warde baseball in playoffs

With Warde and Southington tied at one in the seventh inning of the state quarterfinals, freshman Jimmy Dobbs came up with the game-winning single to propel the Mustangs into the state semifinals.

June 10 - Ludlowe softball wins state championship

Ludlowe softball defeated Southington 5-2 to win the Class LL softball championship. 

The win for Ludlowe snapped Southington's impressive 40-game win streak.

Ludlowe softball also won the FCIAC Championship for the third year in a row. Much like Warde baseball's state championship, I was not in attendance so that is the reason it was not included.   

July 8 - Trumbull/Waterford Babe Ruth game

It was another summer of broadcasting Babe Ruth baseball with Rob Adams. We saw so many great games. Whenever Trumbull and Waterford matchup, you know you're getting a great game between two terrific programs. 

July 8 in the CT State Tournament was no different, Matt Shampine and Ryan DeMelo were locked in a pitcher's duel with Trumbull holding a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before Waterford scored two including the game winning hit by Kian Gordy to lift Waterford to a 2-1 victory. 

Trumbull scored their run in the third when Luke McDermott reached on an error to score DeMelo, who had singled earlier in the inning. 

These two teams would face off later in the tournament, including in the championship, and Trumbull would come out with the victory to head to the New England Regional. Trumbull would end up advancing to the Babe Ruth World Series. Terrific run and a special group. 

July 11 - Waterford/New Milford Babe Ruth no-hitter

A few days later, Waterford would come away with another big win. 

Colby Sheehan threw five no-hit inniings and Thomas Flanagan did not allow a hit over the final two as Waterford came away with a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over New Milford.

October 28 - Ryan Menozzi game-winning catch vs McMahon

Ludlowe's Ryan Menozzi caught a 22-yard touchdown with thirty-six seconds remaining in the game to give the Falcons a 35-32 lead over Ridgefield and Ludlowe would go on to win by that score. 

It was a hard-fought back and forth game that (at the time) kept Ludlowe in state playoff contention.

November 9 - Ludlowe boys' soccer defeats Ridgefield in state playoffs in PK's

Alex Parent came up with some clutch saves in goal as Ludlowe defeated Ridgefield 2-1 in PK's in the second round of the state tournament. Alex missed a cello solo as part of a Veteran's Day concert due to the game running long.

I've mentioned Rob Adams a bunch of times in this blog post and in many blog posts. He posted a blog post earlier today where he included a highlight package of games, he called this year. Go give the blog a read and listen to the highlights. 

 

Supporting Friends

We could call this another edition of "Adventures of Shawn."

All season I said I wanted to try to get to a Newtown game to support my guy Dan Farina, who is in his first year as the head coach there. 

However, due to conflicts with Ludlowe games, there were very few options and I hadn't been able to make it yet. 

Until Sunday. 

I decided I would go to their Class L state semifinal game versus Darien at Newtown High School. 

All week people were trying to get me to come, and I figured I should. I made more of a fuss about reasons not to do than I should have. 

The drive, the rain, buying a ticket, etc. 

Of course I would pick the game where it rained throughout. 

But it was good for me to get out of my comfort zone a bit. 

Driving to Newtown was something new as I was on roads I had never driven myself. Normally I stick to the Fairfield County FCIAC schools to go to, with a few exceptions. 

The drive there and back, while using my GPS, was fine, with the exception of my tire pressure light coming on about five minutes from the school. It was also raining so we had to deal with that for the travel. 

We'll get the tire figured out. Hoping it's just because of the cold. Seems to happen on some of my longer drives in the winter the last couple of years. 

I also had to purchase a ticket, which is fine. 

However, it's not something I am used to. Honestly it might be one of the first times I have ever purchased a ticket for a high school sporting event. Normally, I am either working the game, covering the game, on the comp list, or have access just do to my job and knowing people. Here I was just a fan. 

I'm sure reading this, you are like, why are you telling us this. It's just part of the story. 

As I've said previously, I am not good at being just a fan. I always feel like I need to be doing something and cannot just sit in the stands. If I am just watching, I need to be standing up against a fence and often walking around. 

Thankfully, I was there with Sara Kinley, Mel Sulich, Craig DeAngelis and others so we were able to talk while watching the game. I also Tweeted (Or X'd?) updates, because that's what I do. I just followed their lead and hung out in the end zone with them. 

A different view for me watching a game, but it was also about hanging with friends, while supporting others. 

The rain was constant throughout most of the game. However, heavier at times. 

I was prepared with a rain jacket with a hood, booths and an umbrella, but for some reason, didn't decide to use the umbrella until the second half. By that time, I was soaked. Oh well. It's all part of the fun.

It was weird for me to be rooting for a non-FCIAC team against an FCIAC team, but I support my friends. 

Ok, I've buried the lede (or lead) of how the game went on the field. Darien came away with a 21-0 lead and will play New Canaan next weekend in the Class L Championship. 

Despite the loss, congrats to Dan and the Nighthawks on a terrific season. Tremendous first season with a lot of exciting times in the future. 

Happy I was able to be there to support, despite the result. 

Also, congrats to Tommy Howell, an assistant at Joel Barlow on their state semifinal win and advancing ot the state championship. 

Thanksgiving 2023

Thanksgiving means family, food and football. 

Football both on the professional level and the high school level. 

In high school football action around here, it's the Battle of Fairfield with Ludlowe and Warde.

On Thursday morning at Warde, the Falcons of Ludlowe came away with a 42-12 victory over the Mustangs. 

The game was close on the first half, with Ludlowe holding a 14-0 lead after one and a 14-6 lead at halftime. 

Ludlowe got touchdowns from John Kleinbeck, Justin Toothaker, Chris Bellantoni and Charlie Mahoney, among others. Not intentionally leaving anyone out, just going off the top of my head as I write. Kleinbeck was named the Ludlowe game MVP. 

Ludlowe has now won three straight matchups. Warde's last win came in 2019. The Mustangs lead the post-Fairfield High School matchup 10-8. 

Ludlowe finishes the season at 7-3, while Warde finishes at 1-9. 

Personally, it's always good to see people from town, as well as Alumni, and many others. I was helping with tickets for the first half of the game so I got to see those who came in at the gate I was at. 

Then, in the second half, I was able to walk around the stadium and see people and then watch the second half while trying (key word, trying) to keep The Nest, the Ludlowe student section, in line.

With that, fall sports are over and it's on to winter. For me, that specifically means basketball.

On the NFL side, the Packers got a big win over the Lions. Jordan Love with a strong game and a couple of touchdowns from Christian Watson. 

Green Bay is not having the season we'd like, but the win today over a good Detroit team, keeps them in playoff contention. 

In the other games, the Cowboys defeated the Commanders and the 4ers and Seahawks are playing right now.

Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone. Hope all had a great day with friends and family. 

Thankful for the friendships with many different people in my life from different avenues, even though a lot of them have to do with, or at least stem from work. 

Smaller, quiet here than it's been. Only eight of us where most years it's been more and even some years close to 30, if not more. 

Times change. Traditions change. 

I hate change, but that's just the way it is, for a variety of reasons.

Busy Week

I thought this past week was going to be a relatively quiet week. 

Most fall sports were done and winter sports have not started yet. 

It was anything besides quiet. 

Let's go through it. All of this is in addition to normal work. 

Honestly, most of you won't care about what I'm rambling about, but sometimes it's just about writing for myself and to talk about experiences. 

Monday was our winter coaches meeting at Ludlowe. 

While I don't have to be at this, I try to go and help and it also makes my life easier when it comes to the work I have to do after the meeting related to what takes place at the meeting. Also, if coaches have questions for me, sometimes it's easier to handle in person. 

Tuesday Warde hosted St. Joseph and Staples girls soccer in the state semifinals and I was at the ticket table. I know some people don't like it, but I love that tickets are only only and we don't need to worry about taking cash. Now, sometimes, technology issues are a problem, but we figure it out. 

As for the game, Staples took a 2-0 lead before St Joe's came from behind to win 4-3. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but that was a terrific soccer game between two great teams. 

Wednesday was more soccer as the Ludlowe boys played Hall in the state semifinals at Waterbury's Municipal Stadium complex. 

We had a fan bus so as the Nest Advisor, and the fact that I said sure, I was the adult chaperone for the fan bus. It was interesting. 

The game did not go in Ludlowe's favor as Hall came away with the 1-0 win, in what was a very well played game by both teams. I wrote about this on Wednesday, so I don't need to say the same thing again. 

Thursday was the coaches meeting at Warde, so it was much like Monday's meeting at Ludlowe. 

Friday was a new experience, in a way. 

After the last Ludlowe home football game on November 3, I thought I was done with the scoreboard for football for the season. Well, not so much. 

I was asked to work the scoreboard for the Fairfield Youth Football 8th grade championship game vs Greenwich, which took place at Ludlowe. 

Fairfield came away with the 44-22 victory. Fun to watch them all but especially the kids I know somewhat like Drew Kane, Dylan Toothaker, Ryan Saja and Matthew Keating, just to name a few. 

The whole night was a cool scene. In addition to the scoreboard, they had the PA system, as well as a DJ. They wanted to make it have a big time feel for the kids, which I am always a fan of. 

I was happy for the opportunity and it's always good to network and make connections. Thanks to Mitch Ross, Brendan Sullivan for their help and for asking. 

Nice to work with Mike Donovan and Rob Kaminsky, who were in the booth doing public address. Great to see former Ludlowe athletic trainer Sydney Ciuffo, who was covering the game. 

In addition to the scoreboard, it was somewhat of a site director role, just in terms of running the booth, as well as cleaning up the pylons and chains from the field after the game 

Saturday I was asked and said I would do the scoreboard for the Ludlowe/Warde JV football game. 

I wanted to be nice and give the kids the scoreboard as part of the experience. Parents asked so why not. The fact that it was Ludlowe/Warde made it more of a reason to do it, not that I wouldn't have done it regardless. With the new scoreboard setup, it's more of a process, but happy we were able to make it work. 

Ludlowe came away with the 36-13 win. 

I mention all these things that went on this week and there were even some things I couldn't be at. Sometimes, just too much going on and too many variables. 

Now it's on to Thanksgiving football and then winter sports. 

Two Game Weekend

I know I said I wouldn't write about high school football every week, but here we are again. 

On Friday, I was asked to fill in and  do the scoreboard at Brien McMahon for their game with Warde as their usual scoreboard operator couldn't make it. 

Happy to help out McMahon Athletic Director John Cross as he needed someone to work and always good to pick up side gigs. 

Nice to work with cross country head coach Patrick Bradley, who was on the public address. Appreciate Patrick's help. It's always weird to work in a new spot and with new people, so his friendliness was very much appreciated. 

Whether it's Paul Piorek or Phil Simpson at Ludlowe, or Patrick Bradley on Friday, it's always great to work together with the PA announcer so we help each other and are in sync on down-and-distance and ball spot.  

It was a different controller than the one I used for football at Ludlowe, but one I've used for basketball in the past. That was good as I was somewhat familiar with it and just gave myself a quick tutorial before the game. 

Don't worry, I don't think I messed up the clock this week. It made it somewhat easier that the end of the third and all of the fourth quarter was running time, due to the score. 

As for the game, McMahon led from start to finish and came away with a 49-7 victory. 

It was good to see Warde play since I have not seen them yet this season. Often because their games conflict with Ludlowe and the home games specifically, where I am working the Ludlowe games. 

Saturday, I went to Darien to watch the Blue Wave take on Ludlowe. 

I was pretty sure some of "The Nest" (the Ludlowe student section) was going to come, so figured we'd need to watch them. Overall, they were pretty well behaved.  

I also always want to support my guys. Bunch of baseball, basketball and other players on the football team who I'm close with. I'll obviously support them all. 

Ludlowe took an early 7-0 lead on a touchdown catch by John Kleinbeck from Chris Bellentoni but after Darien tied it up and then took a 14-7 lead after one, they did not relinquish the lead. The Blue Wave defeated Ludlowe 34-21. On the defensive side of the ball for the Falcons, Ryan Torello came away with a well-played interception in the loss. 

On the scoreboard, not a great weekend for the two Fairfield teams. 

Warde falls to 0-6 and will host Bridgeport Central on Friday at 6pm. 

Ludlowe falls to 4-2 and will be back in action on Friday at home at 6pm vs McMahon. 

A couple added factors of this weekend were the weather and traffic, due to road work. Fortunately, at least for me, neither were bad at all. I worried all week about the traffic and alternate routes. Like usual, I worried for no reason. 

Another weekend down. Regular season for many fall sports (other than football) wrapping up and playoffs starting soon. We've got football until (at least) Thanksgiving. 

On to a new week. 

Rainy Football Friday

Don't worry. I'm (most likely) not going to write about every week's football game. 

Today was an insane day. 

With bad rain, flooding and thunder and lightning happening/in the forecast, there were decisions to be made about the games. 

Personally, my feeling was it's football and it's on turf, the games should be played, but I understand it was more about the people getting there and home, people coming to the game, etc.

Ludlowe's game got moved from 6pm to 3:45pm and Warde's game got moved from 6pm to 5pm. Other games in the state got postponed, while others played at the regularly scheduled times. 

Football is a lot more more and has a lot more involved than most other sports. A lot more moving parts when changes are made. This made for a busy and crazy work day. 

Once decisions were made on moving the games, a lot of people had to be notified and things had to be changed. This means officials, game workers, police, ambulance and others. This doesn't include families, media and just other fans. 

Of course, I was at Ludlowe so then it became "game mode."

Once all the "office work" was done, it was helping to get everything set up out on the field and around the stadium for the game, while getting wet and working to keep equipment and other important items dry. 

As I always am, I was on the scoreboard for the game. I actually felt guilty being in the press box and being mostly warm and dry, at least compared to those out in the elements. We weren't totally dry as some windows had to be open and the hatch to the roof of the press box was open as the Ludlowe coaches were on top of the press box coaching and Ludlowe players were filming next to me. 

In was fun to work with Phil Simpson, who was back on the public address tonight, after working with Phil all last season. 

Well, the game did not go in Ludlowe's favor and did not last long. Lightning was seen at 5:04pm with 1:54 left in the first half with New Canaan on top 43-0. 

Due to this, the stadium had to be cleared and the teams were sent to the school. Before the teams even got off the field there was word that the game was called. Shortly, word came down that we were indeed done. The game would be final. 

I get it. Be safe, especially with the score. Now can they actually have a game be official before halftime? I'm not really sure, but that's what happened. It sounds like it might have been a similar situation in the Warde/Wilton game. 

Then it was cleaning up afterwards. The normal post-football game cleanup, plus tents that were put up to try to try to keep people dry, and other items that were left out as the teams ran for cover when the game was stopped. 

A wet, crazy, stressful, frustrating (and kind of fun, though I think few others would agree) day. 

Falcons Soar to Huge Victory In Home Opener

Sometimes we rank games and wins bigger than they really are. Maybe I am doing that, but maybe not.

Ludlowe football defeated Hamden on Friday night 35-14 in the Falcons home opener. Hamden was definitely favored coming into the game. 

I think this is the biggest win the Ludlowe football history. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has different thoughts. I've seen a lot of the games (and most of the wins) since 2009. While there were other wins that were a lot of fun, none of those compare to this. Hamden was ranked top five in Class LL. 

Those previous teams were different than this one. As if every team. Things change over time. 

Ludlowe is currently 3-0 after beating Simsbury, Bridgeport Central and now Hamden to open the season. Big game versus New Canaan next Friday at home at 6pm. 

Big games from many, including the entire defense. I will shout out Jackson Frame, who had three interceptions and a touchdown catch and Justin Toothaker who had a touchdown catch. 

Tremendous job by all the players and coaches. Total team win. 

I was back on the scoreboard, as I will be for all the games this year, just as I was a season ago. Nice to work with Paul Piorek, who is back as the voice of Ludlowe football on the PA this season. 

The Nest, the Ludlowe student section, was awesome tonight. Not only were they out in numbers in a USA theme, but they were loud and into the game all night. 

Back at it next week. Lots of other sports between now and then. 

2022 Thanksgiving Football

Thanksgiving means Ludlowe vs Warde in football. 

This year, the game was held at Ludlowe. The Mustangs came in with a 5-4 record, while the Falcons came in with a record of 4-5. 

I once again, as I have all season, had scoreboard duties. For a game like this, there's so many people I know (I was told by Rob Adams the other day that I should run for First Selectman.) I was able to see a lot of people pre-game, halftime and postgame, but not as much as normal, or really as much as I might like. 

But I was working so I had a job to do...the scoreboard. 

I do more that that, because I'm too nice and I care too much. 

In terms of the game, the first half did not see much offense. 

Ludlowe got on the board with 8:46 to go in the first quarter. Jack Ransome punched it in from a yard out and Caleb McNeil's kick put the Falcons up 7-0. The Ransome run was set up by a few long run's from Aaron Field. 

The game would say 7-0 through the first half, Ludlowe had chances to extend the lead and Warde had chances of their own, but turnovers hurt both teams ability to score. 

With 8:25 left in the third, Michael Palladino took the direct snap and ran in around the left side from seven yards out to extend the Ludlowe lead to 14-0. 

Warde came right back down the field and answered. Charlie Gulbin connected with Will Rottkamp on the five-yard score to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 5:34 left in the third. 

We would head to the fourth quarter, with Ludlowe ahead 14-7. 

Warde would not go away. The Mustangs cut the deficit to one, 14-13 when Gulbin found TJ Sinis for the 10-yard touchdown. The Mustangs would go for two and convert as the Gulbin to Sinis connection worked again to give Warde a 15-14 lead with 9:27 to play. 

Ludlowe re-took the lead with 8:13 left. Field ran in from 25-yards out. The two-point try was no good but Ludlowe led 20-15. 

After an interception by Field on the defensive end, he iced the game with a 74-yard run with 4:41 remaining. Field ran in the two-point try to extend the Ludlowe lead to 28-15. 

Ludlowe would retain the Gallagher-Banyas Trophy. The Falcons have now won two in a row against the Mustangs, three in a row if you count the private league of 2020. If you don't count 2020, Warde leads the post-Fairfield High series 10-7. 

Field was named the Ludlowe game MVP, while Sinis took home the honor for the Mustangs. The MVP award is presented by the Fairfield Rotary Club. As part of the award, each recipient gets a $1,000 scholarship. 

Doing the clock all year was a different experience. Fun at times frustrating at others. Had fun with Phil Simpson, who was doing PA all year, in the booth. We worked well together, helping each other out, and just having conversations when we could also. I also had fun with some of the other people in the booth, like the Ludlowe players who were filming the game. Thank you guys for your help as spotters on plays. 

Finally, a shout out to Kyle Geriak for a tremendous job singing the National Anthem at a number of games, including teaming up with the band for today's Anthem. 

On to winter sports, especially basketball for me. 

Warde Football Saturday Afternoon

I've had multiple people tell me this Fall that I need to come to a Warde football game. 

Now, I don't actually NEED to come, but people say I should since I go to all of the Ludlowe games. My actual job doesn't require me to go to games, but I am a sports person. However, I can pick and choose what games I go to, especially for ones I am not working in some capacity (tickets, scoreboard, etc.) 

With Ludlowe's game moved from Friday to Thursday and Warde's game moved from Friday to Saturday this week, I was able to attend both. 

When I showed up to Warde, wearing a Warde Athletics t-shirt, people were surprised to see me. Even more surprised I think to see my in red. 

I also got yelled at/questioned by multiple Ludlowe people for my shirt. I work at both schools, people! Yes, I am at Ludlowe a lot more for games and I did go to Ludlowe, but I still will support Warde. 

I mean, why not go? It was a nice day out (it was a shorts day in November) and a good day for football. In addition, Warde was playing New Canaan, where Dan Farina, who's a good friend, as well as someone who works in the Athletic Dept. at Ludlowe, is the offensive coordinator. 

I stood with some Warde people for the first half, and then hung in the stands with some friends of Dan. 

As I often say, I'm not great at sitting in the stands watching a game. Then again, we were talking so it wasn't as odd. I also figure I was just there to watch the game, not work it, so by being in the stands, I could just watch. 

The game did not go in favor of the home team, as New Canaan came away with the 41-14 victory. 

New Canaan took a 7-0 lead after a quarter and a 27-7 lead at halftime. The Rams finished the half strong with a long field goal and a fumble returned for a touchdown in the last 10 seconds of the half. The Mustangs touchdown came on a QB keeper from the one-inch line by Charlie Gulbin. 

New Canaan tacked on two more scores in the third quarter, before Warde got a touchdown in the fourth, as Gulbin connected with Lucas Coleman from three yards out. 

Warde currently sits with a 5-4 record, heading into the Thanksgiving matchup with Ludlowe. A Mustang win will have them finish with a winning record. Ludlowe, who beat Central on Thursday, needs a win to finish with a .500 record. 

Controlling the Board

There are many people that fans at games can have a problem with. A couple of those people have jobs in the press box. Those are the PA announcer and the scoreboard operator. 

Well, I have a duty of being the scoreboard operator for the Ludlowe home football games at Taft Field this season (bring on the hate messages now). 

I've done the scoreboard for plenty of sports, most notably baseball and basketball, at many levels. I've even done it for sub-varsity football. However, doing running the scoreboard for a varsity football game is different. 

Overall through three games, I've learned that it's not too hard. Like anything, once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier. Knowing the sport definitely is important, as you know things to look for.  

Oh, I've messed up. Luckily, it hasn't been that often and I haven't gotten yelled at. 

One of the things that makes football more difficult, at least for me, as opposed to say basketball, is being able to see the field. 

Being up in the press box, it's s decent way down to the field. Plus at night, with the glare sometimes from the lights, it's somewhat tough to see. 

There are many things needed to look for. You need to look at the signals from the officials, most notably when to start and stop the clock. You also need to see the down and distance, which is on the far side of the field. 

That being said, as I've done it more, I've gotten more comfortable. 

It's been fun in the booth with Phil Simpson doing PA alongside. We've also been joined in the booth by members of the Ludlowe team who are filming. Tonight, we had some of the Darien Athletic Foundation Media crew, led by Damian Andrew, who was broadcasting the game. Thanks, guys, for some of the corrections. 

It's been three games, and we have two left at home for the season. November 11 against Bridgeport Central and Thanksgiving morning for Warde. 

After that, we will be on to winter sports, including basketball. That's more my comfort zone.
